Nike introduces their new hemp sneakers

Of the many products hemp can be used for, fashion apparel is not one that comes first to consumers’ minds. Yet, farmers have been harvesting hemp for textiles long ago. In fact, it is one of the most profitable products the hemp industry relies on.

And as the industry continued to grow, it was just a matter of time for a big fashion company to experiment with the plant-based textile. As Nike did with one of their latest sneakers: the Nike Air Zoom Type ‘Hemp’ shoe.

The shoe is a collaboration between the UK based retailer sized? and Nike. Sneakerheads looking to expand their collection can already buy the Airs in the retailer’s app and in stores. sized? made the official launch last Friday, August the 28th.

As for the design, the retailer made a detailed post in their blog explaining it. According to sized?, the sneakers are an attempt to bring the cultures of London and Tokyo together. “We’ve drawn influence from minimalistic Japanese design and built the pair with hemp across its uppers for a raw, natural aesthetic. Hints of blue appear on the corduroy eyestay, heel tab, printed Swooshes and stitching for a contrasting-yet-complementary finish,” can be read in the blog.

It also begs to mention that the shoe takes inspiration from the classic Nike Air’s original design, one of the most popular from the company.

Another hemp shoe?

It appears Nike is not done with hemp. According to the site Hyperbeast, the company will be working with Stüssy to create a new shoe made out of hemp. This one is based on the Air Force 1 design and will feature a “fossil stone” color.

In his Instagram account, sneaker leaker py_rates has said that the shoes are expected to drop this upcoming holiday season along with a black version.
